Project Description

LCA is a catholic school grades K through 12 in the City of Nogales AZ. In 2009, LCA approached the Santa Fe Ranch about doing “green” projects with the Ranch. The first project was a worm farm- the Ranch purchased two worm farm kits and the LCA junior class assembled one at the school, the other at the Ranch- From there the association has grown each year- with SFR assistance, LCA cleared an area at their school and built a vegetable garden. The garden has been blended with the school curriculum where each grade has its own plot and its own growing project. LCA and the Ranch designed a small greenhouse and a quiet seating area, the Three Sisters’ Garden, built entirely by the students to expand the purposes of their garden. LCA’s most recent project has been to create a rooftop water harvesting system. In 2012 LCA was awarded one of fifteen national awards from the American Society of Catholic Women, “Caring for the Creation”.

In addition to the projects carried out at their school, LCA has come out to the ranch for a composting project and they helped us build the tiled altar for the Virgen de Guadalupe at Las Lagunas.
LCA dancers and singers have participated at our December 12 mass and at evening events at the wetlands. The LCA project has been mostly directed by Arlyn Johnson on the ranch side and Teresita Scully on the LCA side.
